HYDROSPHERE

Water paved the way for life on earth. It is important for all life processes. Water by itself is a unique and complex chemical with amazing properties. In this unit you will see how water affects other systems on Earth, impacts communities, and provides the essentials for life.

Life Blood of a Community

Water is never more important than in a dessert.  Our community is surrounded by arid landscapes.  The vast majority of our communities water comes from snow pack on the Abajo Mountain (Blue Mountains).  The water was precariously retrieved by building a tunnel through the mountains in order to reach Blanding citizens.  Without this engineering feat our community would not exist.  The city of Blanding relies on engineers to help retrieve, pipe, purify, and dispose of our water resources.

Harnessing Water's Power

In this video clip the pros and cons of building massive dams is reflected upon with an appreciation for both the engineering feat and the detriment to the environment.  As humans strive for energy and water security there are side effects.  Altering the natural landscape has changed our county.  The tourism the lake brings helps our economy but our native fish, wildlife, and historical sites are impacted. It is essential that we all take stewardship of our land seriously and become knowledgeable and active in how we manage and use our lands natural resources.

Water on the Range

Water is the number one reason plants grow.  If there are drought years it greatly decreases plant growth.  If cattle and wildlife then graze on the plants that further creates stress for plants.  Rangeland management is an essential job to help monitor the health of public rangeland (BLM and Forest).  This video highlights the job of range conservation so that sustained used of public lands can continue.

Sampling the San Juan

This video tour takes you down the San Juan River with the Division of Wildlife Resources.  Throughout the trip the biologists mark and recapture Colorado Pike Minnow and Razorback Suckers (endangered native fish) as well as carry out non-native removal of evasive species that out- compete our native fish.  It is obvious the role water plays for the life of a fish.  It is awesome though that properties of water like conductivity allow biologist to shock and sample the waters.

Water in Utah

Where does our water in Utah come from?  Just how important is snow?  Where does our precipitation (snow and rain) come from?  This video answers all these important questions.  The water cycle and the different forms of precipitation DO make a difference and we DO definitely prefer SNOW over RAIN for our water resource in the state of Utah.
